We cordially invite members of the COST Action CA21101 (“COSY”), as well as all interested parties, to Bologna, for the Third General Meeting of our COST Action. The meeting will be organized by the University of Bologna (Italy). It will start on Wednesday, the 9th of July 2025, in the morning and will end on Friday, the 11th of July, in the afternoon.
The meeting is focused on the experimental and theoretical characterization of confined molecular systems, from those relevant in new materials research to those playing a key role in astrochemistry. It is an opportunity for active networking between Action members with complementary and highly diverse expertise in confined molecular systems. The 3rd COSY General Meeting is expected to strengthen the existing collaborations between the Action members and to establish new ones. It will be also a crucial event to connect all WGs together, with the final aim to achieve the Grant Period Goals. The meeting will host invited overview and regular invited talks reporting on joint projects between Action members, also including those related to STSM.

The meeting will be held at the “Tibiletti” lecture hall, Department of Philosophy (Dipartimento di Filosofia), Via Zamboni 38, Bologna. The lecture hall is located in the city center of Bologna: starting from the Two Towers (Due Torri), which are the symbol of Bologna and visible from everywhere in the city center, you have to walk along via Zamboni for about 500 meters:
Bologna is medieval city, and this corresponds to the current city center. It was full of towers. Nowadays, there are only a few of them and the “Two Towers” became the symbol of the city. Bologna is famous for its cuisine and its porticos, which have recently become a UNESCO heritage site. Bologna also hosts the oldest university in the world.

Travel (How to get to Bologna)
Bologna is strategically well located in the heart of northern Italy, a long-standing transit, exchange and destination hub for many major travel infrastructures. Located on the Via Emilia, the city lies a short distance from the sea of the Romagna Riviera and towns such as Florence (35 minutes by high-speed train), Venice (1.5 hours by high-speed train), Milan (1 hour by high-speed train), and Verona (less than 1 hour by train). It can therefore be easily reached by car, train, bus or plane.
- BY TRAIN – Bologna’s Central Station serves as final destination for a large number of local, intercity and high-speed trains connecting neighboring locations and the country’s main cities. Bologna’s Central Station is a main hub: the vast majority of long-distance (high-speed) trains from north to south and vice versa stops in Bologna. Please, visit Trenitalia (https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html) or Italo (https://www.italotreno.com/en/booking-train-ticket) websites to find out about trains inbound to Bologna. Another option is offered by Trainline (https://www.thetrainline.com/it).
The station is also the terminus of the Marconi Express, a monorail link service to Bologna airport. - BY PLANE – Guglielmo Marconi Airport is located about 10 km from the city center. Dozens of flights from Italian and international destinations land here daily: most of the European cities are directly connected to Bologna. The airport is connected to the central railway station by the Marconi Express service, which takes only 7 minutes to cover the route. The monorail costs €12,80 one way and €23,30 round trip.
In addition to this, from 19 May 2025, is the new “Q” BUS CONNECTION Bologna Airport with Maggiore Hospital and Central Station. The urban fare of €2.30 is valid for all urban tickets and integration with Marconi Express. Electric buses, easy purchase (ticket machines, contactless, Tper sales points, on the website, and on the Roger app). Frequency: 30 minutes.
From the airport you can also reach the center by taxi. A ride to/from the center takes about 20-30 minutes (up to 40 minutes depending on the traffic) with the price ranging from € 20.00-25.00. - BY CAR – If you travel by car, you may want to know that Bologna is one of Italy’s major motorway junctions, connecting the north and south of the country. Bologna is located along the A1, only 1 hour from Florence (southbound), and just over 2 hours from Milan (northbound). Bologna is also the gateway to the A14, running along the Adriatic side of the peninsula from Romagna all the way to Taranto. Another important thoroughfare is the A13 towards Veneto, connecting Bologna to cities such as Ferrara and Padua, the gateway to Venice.
If you are travelling by car, you should know that city center is inside at the Limited Access Zone (ZTL) from 7am to 8pm. Please, check with your host (hotel, apartment owner, …) how to get the permission to enter ZTL. - BY BUS – Buses arriving from outside the city travel primarily from the main coach station – located (Piazza XX Settembre) a short distance from the train station – with connections throughout Italy and even to foreign countries. Visit the coach station website for information on bus routes arriving from outside the city.
