SUMMARY:"COSY" Satellite of the Cluster-Surface Interaction Meeting
DESCRIPTION:A dedicated satellite meeting will be organized as a follow-up of the Cluster-Surface Interaction-2024 (CSI-2024) conference to be held in Benried\, rather than Tutzing and near Munich\, Germany in 7-9 April 2024:  https://www.e-conversion.de/csi-2024. The CSI conference series is well-established\, has been running since 2010\, and its meetings are focused on the general topic of deriving fundamental and applied knowledge on the interaction between metal or metal oxide clusters and their deposition support. Various aspects of clusters deposited on surfaces are typically considered\, with a particular focus on growth\, dynamics\, electronic structure\, and applications\, addressing both experimental and theoretical modelling aspects. Cluster deposition on supports represents an important form of confinement\, with implications in various fields\, including heterogeneous catalysis\, sensing\, etc. The COSY Action and in particular its WG3 has many members working in closely related fields. It is therefore natural to network and connect with CSI\, as a scientific community that shares common interests and perspectives. We therefore decided to join forces with CSI by organizing a satellite meeting of the CSI-2024 conference. Leading experts from the COSY network will be invited to deliver a talk at this satellite\, but participation is open to all COSY members.\n\nOur goals in organizing this satellite symposium are: \n\n1. To spread knowledge about the research conducted by COSY within the scientifically related CSI community\,\n2. To trigger collaborations between CSI and COSY researchers. This will translate into specific tangible outcomes:\n(i) minutes of the discussion table between COSY and CSI members to be held at the symposium;\n(ii) common publications and presentation at conference to be promoted by this meeting involving COSY and CSI members;\n3. Selected slides of the meeting shared via the COSY Action Web site.\nA number of members from the COST Action are confirmed speakers of the CSI conference (in alphabetical order): \n\nFrancesca Baletto\, University of Milan\nAlessandro Fortunelli\, CNR-ICCOM\nSandra Gómez\, University of Salamanca\nElisa Jimenez-Izal\, University of the Basque Country\n M. SUMMARY:1st Webinar of the COST Action "COSY"
DESCRIPTION:The COSY webinars will be organized every three months (each webinar will consist of one lecture): \n\nMarch 25th\, 2024\nSeptember 18th\, 2024\n\nThe 1st Webinar:\nModerator: Kaido Sillar (University of Tartu)\nSpeaker: María Pilar de Lara-Castells (Spanish National Research Council) \n \nSpeaker: María Pilar de Lara-Castells (AbinitFot Group\, IFF-CSIC\, Madrid)\nAn ab initio journey towards the molecular-level understanding of subnanometric metal clusters\nCurrent advances in synthesizing and characterizing atomically precise monodisperse metal clusters (AMCs) at the subnanometer (Angstrom) scale have opened fascinating possibilities in new quantum materials research. Their quantized ‘molecule-like’ electronic structure showcases unique stability and physical and chemical properties different from those of nanoparticles and bulk materials. When integrated into materials that interact with environmental molecules and sunlight\, AMCs may exhibit enhanced (photo)catalytic activity\, electronic properties\, and even optical behavior. Their tiny size (below 1 nm) makes free AMCs amenable to atomic-scale modelling using either density functional theory (DFT)-based approaches or methods at a higher level of ab initio theory\, even including nonadiabatic (e.g.\, Jahn-Teller) effects. Surfacesupported AMCs can routinely be modelled using DFT-based single-reference methods\, enabling real-time molecular dynamics simulations on the nanoseconds scale. The study of their optical properties is also possible using timedependent DFT or reduced density matrix theory. All these computational and theoretical efforts aim to achieve a molecular-level understanding of the stability and properties of AMCs as function of their chemical composition\, size\, and structural fluxionality in different thermodynamical conditions (temperature and pressure). These efforts bear the potential of guiding experiments to control AMCs functionalities for applications. In this webinar\, the potential of state-of-the-art ab initio (DFT and beyond DFT) modelling will be emphasized through an illustrative overview of recent studies of free and surface-supported AMCs\, including a comparison with experimental measurements [1-17]. Possible directions for methodological enhancements on the ab initio modelling of hybrid AMCs-materials systems will also be discussed with a focus on AMCs-support intermolecular interactions\, including excited states. \nReferences:\n1. SUMMARY:Second Virtual Meeting of the COSY WG3
DESCRIPTION:Control at the Nanoscale – Manipulating Structure and Properties of Nanoscale Clusters. Recent Experimental and Theoretical Advances and Future Challenges\nLik to registration:\nhttps://forms.gle/p9bvTfaYwgiYxJCK7\nThe 2nd WG3 Virtual Symposium will focus on recent experimental and theoretical advancements in the field of nanoscale cluster science\, as well as the future challenges and opportunities. The topics will include: 1) The controlled and precise synthesis and characterization of nanoscale clusters with different compositions\, sizes\, shapes\, and structures; 2) The manipulation and control of nanoscale clusters using external stimuli such as light\, electric fields\, magnetic fields\, or chemical agents; 3) The investigation of the structure-property relationships of nanoscale clusters and their controlled applications in catalysis\, optics\, electronics\, energy conversion\, and storage; 4)The development of computational methods and models for simulating and accurately predicting the properties of nanoscale clusters. The symposium will bring together researchers from different disciplines and backgrounds who share a common interest in nanoscale cluster science at the extreme limit of control. It will provide a platform for exchanging ideas\, presenting results\, discussing challenges\, and fostering collaborations. The symposium may also feature external invited speakers who are leading experts in the field\, as well as presentations in dedicated sessions (see below) and panel discussions. The primary goal of WG3 S-2 is to make the point within the COSY community on the general topic of control at the nanoscale. Transfer of knowledge among the symposium participants\, dissemination of the results already achieved within the framework of WG3\, and positioning in terms of short- and medium-term perspectives will be the main goals of the symposium. Additionally\, the convenience of forming task-force groups (TFGs) on specific topics\, resulting in multi-authored publications will be discussed. An idea is eg that each TFG be led by an experienced researcher and co-led by an early-stage investigator. We will have a dedicated session about possible TFGs and also about collecting suggestions for a WG3 podcast we need to prepare\, please see the google form. \nIn terms of WG3 member contributions\, the program will foresee:\n(1) a limited number of “oral” presentations (Faraday Discussions type\, thus\, max 5’ time and 5 pptx slides for the oral presentation + 15’ discussion and Q&A) on recent methodological advances or novel concepts in the field (both experimental and theoretical);\n(2) a larger number of “poster” presentations (one or few\, please no more than 3! interesting case-studies/systems per presenter)\, supported by 2’ time flash presentations and 2 pptx slides.\n\nContributions from young scientists\, and colleagues from ITC countries and/or lesser represented gender are welcome.\n  \nConference Schedule – Essential Program (November 27th\, 2023)\n\n\n\nTime\nEvent\nChairs\nPresenters\n\n\n08:50 – 09:10\nRegistration and Forewords\n\n\n\n\n09:10 – 10:40\nSession 1 – Small Clusters\nFortunelli & Roongcharoen\nLopez-Quintela (L)\, Carrol (L)\, Krupka (S)\, Sanader-Maršić (S)\, Quintana-González (S)\, Shi (S)\n\n\n10:40 – 10:50\nShort Break\n\n\n\n\n10:50 – 12:20\nSession 2 – Larger Clusters and Particles\nMoskaleva & Carroll\nMelani (L)\, Barrabés (L)\, Banu (S)\, Bruix (S)\, Laverdure (S)\, Roongcharoen (S)\, Fortunelli/Kadam (S)\n\n\n12:20 – 13:20\nLunch Break\n\n\n\n\n13:20 – 14:50\nSession 3 – Complex Processes under Confinement\nGiovannini & Šekutor\nMudric (L)\, Rupprechter (L)\, Zinzani (S)\, Marques (S)\, Santos (S)\, Ólafsson (S)\, Lushchikova (S)\n\n\n14:50 – 15:00\nShort Break\n\n\n\n\n15:00 – 16:30\nSession 4 – Optical Properties\nLópez & Melani\nVanzan (L)\, Giovannini (L)\, Stener (S)\, Striccoli (S-1)\, Striccoli (S-2)\, Naumkin (S)\, Belo (S)\n\n\n16:30 – 17:00\nSession 5 – Discussion on podcast and TFGs\nFortunelli & Moskaleva\n\n\n\n\n> \nProgram with Titles of Presentations and DOIs/Links\n\n\n\nTime\nEvent\nChairs\nPresenters\n\n\n08:50 – 09:10\nRegistration and Forewords\n\n\n\n\n09:10 – 10:40\nSession 1 – Small Clusters\nFortunelli & Roongcharoen\nM. SUMMARY:Hands-on Training 'Read-My-Proposal'
DESCRIPTION:Hands-on Training ‘Read- My-Proposal’\nTransversal Goup Meeting\nMentoring Event – Part 1: Introduction to competitive grant proposal and manuscript writing\nDate: 6 July 2023 \nVenue: Zoom \nRegistration: Eventbrite registration \nProgram: \n13.30 – 13.35 CET. Opening remarks by Dr. Maria Pilar De Lara-Castells\, COST-COSY Action Chair & Dr. Serim Ilday\, COST-COSY Inclusiveness Coordinator \n13.35 – 13.55 CET. “Go for your research idea – apply for an ERC grant!” by Dr. Janka Mátrai\, Scientific Advisor\, European Research Council (ERC) Executive Agency (ERCEA) \n13.55 – 14.00 CET. Questions & Answers \n14.00 – 14.20 CET. “An Insider’s View of Nature Journals” by Dr. Alberto Moscatelli\, Chief Editor\, Nature Nanotechnology \n14.20 – 14.25 CET. Questions & Answers \n14.25 – 14.30 CET. Closing remarks \nDescription of the event: \nObtaining competitive research grants or publishing in top-tier journals can be highly competitive. As the COST-COSY action\, we can think of several reasons why some countries may have a lower success rate in securing such grants or publishing high-impact papers with broad appeal. Here are a few factors we think may contribute to this fact: \n1.Research Infrastructure and Capacity: The requirement for access to state-of-the-art facilities\, cutting-edge technologies\, and a strong research ecosystem is critical for scientific impact. Countries that have invested less in research infrastructure may find it difficult to meet the requirements for executing the necessary research. \n2.Research Culture and Science Capital: Countries with a less-developed research culture\, science capital\, and limited previous success in securing competitive grants or publishing in top-tier journals may face scepticism over the potential for impactful research output from reviewers. \n3.Limited International Visibility: High-impact research is often fed by international collaborations allowing researchers to work across borders and disciplines. Countries with limited international collaborations and networking may struggle to demonstrate the potential for groundbreaking research that transcends national boundaries. Limited international visibility may limit competitiveness. \n4.Awareness and Preparation: Careful preparation\, strategic planning\, and a deep understanding of the evaluation criteria are critical in grant applications and paper submissions. Countries that have limited  awareness or lack specific support mechanisms for researchers in preparing ERC applications or framing and communicating their research output may struggle to produce high-quality proposals/manuscripts that meet the expectations of the evaluators. \n5.Language and Communication Barriers: The language of the application process can pose challenges for researchers from non-English-speaking countries. Strong English writing and communication skills are essential for effectively presenting research proposals. Researchers from countries where English is not the primary language may face additional difficulties conveying their ideas and research potential. \n  \nWith this event\, we would like to highlight that while some countries may face specific challenges\, there are initiatives at the European level to support researchers from less research-intensive countries. We will concentrate on the “Awareness and Preparation” part of our list and focus on capacity-building for early- and mid-career researchers from these countries.

SUMMARY:FemCOSY Meeting
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to invite you to the first event of FemCOSY\, an initiative within the COSY COST that focuses on women in science\, particularly in fields where they are underrepresented\, such as Physics and Computational Chemistry\, and also within the COSY network. Our aim is to identify the obstacles women face during their scientific careers and propose solutions to overcome them. \nThe first event will be a webinar on May 2nd\, 2023\, from 10:00 to 12:00 CET (GMT+1) featuring three successful women in science who will share their experiences and propose solutions to the challenges faced by women in science. We are thrilled to announce our distinguished speakers: \n\nProf. Leticia González\, University of Vienna (Austria)\nProf. Nadine Halberstadt\, CNRS\, LCAR-IRSAMC (France)\nProf. Karina Morgenstern\, Ruhr-University of Bochum (Germany)\n\nThe webinar will have a roundtable discussion format\, where some of the questions that will be for open discussion are: \n\nWhat are the obstacles\, if any\, for women in science?\nWhat developments or changes do you think will be needed to further advance women in science\, in general\, and in your field of research\, in particular?\nShall we consider normal that women are a minority in science\, especially in leadership positions? Or do you think that current roles are culturally imposed and could be changed in a world where women have equal opportunities?\nAre there any guidance or suggestions you would like to offer to a younger edition of yourself who is living in the present time?\n\nWe believe that this event will provide valuable insights and networking opportunities for all participants. We would also like to remind you that there will be a section on the COSY webpage dedicated to FemCOSY. We encourage every woman in COSY to send us (Francesca or Noelia) a portrait photo to create a “women group photo.” \nWe look forward to “seeing you” in the virtual meeting on May 2nd! Please save the date and stay tuned for more details at the webpage site: https://cost-cosy.eu/femcosy/ \n  \nDownload pdf \nCA21101_1st_FemCOSY_webinar\nSlides from meeting\nDownload pdf \nWelcome_to_1st-FemCOSY_event_post

DESCRIPTION:First General Meeting of the COST Action CA21101 – COSY: Confined Molecular Systems: From a New Generation of Materials to the Stars.\nhttps://generalmeeting.cost-cosy.eu/ \n\nUniversidad de Cádiz (Cádiz \, Spain) March 1-3 2023\n\n\nWe cordially invite members of the COST Action CA21101 (“COSY”)\, as well as all interested parties\, to Cádiz\, for the First General Meeting of our COST Action. It will be dedicated to a better understanding and recognition of issues relevant to the experimental and theoretical characterization of confined molecular systems\, from those relevant in new materials research\, to those playing a key role in astrochemistry. It is an opportunity for active networking between Action members with complementary and highly diverse expertise in confined molecular systems. This first COSY General Meeting is intended to be a forum for detailed discussions. It will thus provide an opportunity for the members of the Action’s five Working Groups (WGs) to undertake activities that will address the goals of the 1st Grant Period of the COST Action. For this purpose\, the meeting will host dedicated sessions for the five WGs. In addition to invited talks of 25 minutes by COSY members from all WGs\, the participants will be also invited to present hot topic posters preceded by 2-minutes flash presentations which will be held after the first scientific session. \nThe meeting will be organized by the Universidad de Cádiz (Cádiz\, Spain) and CSIC (Madrid\, Spain). It will start on Wednesday\, the 1st of March in the morning and end on Friday\, the 3rd of March before lunch. \nThe meeting will serve as a platform to connect the five Working Groups (WGs) of COSY: (WG1: red\, WG2: brown; WG3: violet; WG4 blue; WG5: green). \n\n

SUMMARY:Experiment and Theory Join Forces on Characterization of Confined Molecular Systems
DESCRIPTION:Experiment and Theory Join Forces on Characterization of Confined Molecular Systems\nWorking Group 3 meeting.\nCOSY WG3 S-1 Symposium \nOne-day virtual meeting of WG3: WG3 S-1\, held on December 19\, 2022\, 09:30-17:30 via zoom. \nWG3 and other WG participants convened virtually to discuss the latest advances in experimental and theoretical techniques for characterization/property-prediction and how they can benefit from closer interactions and synergies. Focus was on advanced characterization (ideally\, high-resolution and in-situ) and its theoretical modeling. \nThe total number of attendees was 61. \nWG3 S-1 was structured in 5 sessions with two longer (L) and 4 shorter (S) presentations: \nSession 1 – Microscopic Models\nSession 2 – Vibrations\nSession 3 – Restructuring\nSession 4 – Reactivity\nSession 5 – Response \nOf the longer presentations\, 50% were given by females; of the shorter presentations\, 40% were given by females. 5 presentations were given by young researchers. \nIt was organized according to a Faraday-Discussions-type format: each one of the 5 sessions of 72′ started with 2 longer oral presentations (lasting around 5′) followed by their open discussion up to 15′ for each presentation\, then 4 shorter oral presentations (around 2-3′) followed by their open discussion up to 5-6′ for each presentation. Presenters were asked in advance to share the DOIs of the papers they would present so that attendees could look at the papers in advance\, and the oral presentations could be essential to leave room to an articulated and fruitful discussion. Again in a Faraday-Discussions-type format\, Questions & Answers were collected with the help of all participants either presenting or making questions and shared for stronger impact at https://docs.google.com/document/d/1i6xGDRwGYE6ocaDkv55Agm8QHE9vSKcn/edit. \nIn connection with reporting for the 1st GM\, we created a form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd0VO8QdBdadn_QKRnhKQAfHS6hmSkiwQ_01GD-_viqF-WFFw/viewform\, and asked a few questions on the WG3 S-1 meeting\, restricted to WG3 members. We collected 44 responses\, of which 30 approved and encouraged similar symposia in the future\, 7 approved but would prefer in-person symposia in the future\, and 2 did not approve\, although they did not attend WG3 S-1\, and 6 did not answer perhaps because they were unable to attend WG3 S-1. \nEssential Program\n09:20 – 09:30 Registration and Forewords\n09:30 – 10:42 Session 1 – Microscopic Models\nPresenters: Vajda (L)\, Palmer (L)\, Bonačić-Koutecky &\nMravak (S-1)\, Molina (S)\, Ólafsson (S)\, Fortunelli (S-1)\n10:42 – 11:00 Short Break\n11:00 – 12:12 Session 2 – Vibrations\nPresenters: Bürgi (L)\, Asmis (L)\, Šekutor (S)\, Bacanu\n(S)\, Stener (S-1)\, Fortunelli (S-2)\n12:12 – 13:00 Lunch Break\n13:00 – 14:12 Session 3 – Restructuring\nPresenters: López (L)\, Honkala (L)\, Bonačić-Koutecky &\nPerić-Bakulić (S-2)\, Neyman (S)\, Bruix (S)\, Marques (S)\n14:12 – 14:30 Short Break\n14:30 – 15:42 Session 4 – Reactivity\nPresenters: Barrabés (L)\, Baletto (L)\, Medved (S)\,\nLópez (S)\, Langner (S)\, Moskaleva (S)\n15:42 – 16:00 Short Break\n16:00 – 17:12 Session 5 – Response\nPresenters: Stener (L)\, Cappelli (L)\, Handelman (S)\,\nIvanova (S)\, Stener (S-2)\, Fortunelli (S-3) \n  \nOrganizers\nAlessandro Fortunelli and Lyudmila Moskaleva
