DESCRIPTION:Once upon the time there was … an astrochemistry story\nCristina Puzzarini. Dept. Chemistry “Giacomo Ciamician” University of Bologna\, Bologna\, 40129\, Italy. \nThe discovery of an increasing number of complex organic molecules in the interstellar medium (ISM) raises fundamental questions about how chemical reactivity can proceed efficiently under extreme astrophysical conditions characterized by very low temperatures\, low densities\, and pervasive ionizing radiation [1]. Under such conditions\, conventional chemical intuition fails\, and a detailed molecular-level understanding becomes essential. In this context\, computational chemistry plays a central role in identifying viable reaction pathways and providing quantitative kinetic data for astrochemical modeling. \nThis seminar tackles the challenge of the interstellar chemistry and addresses the strategy to unveil it. The starting point is the quantum-chemical exploration of reactive potential energy surfaces (PESs) relevant to interstellar chemistry [1]. High-level electronic structure methods\, ranging from density functional theory to coupled-cluster-based composite schemes\, enable accurate characterization of pre-reactive complexes\, submerged transition states\, and exothermic bimolecular products that satisfy the stringent constraints imposed by the ISM [1-5]. Particular emphasis is placed on automated and semi-automated PES exploration workflows\, which systematically identify all energetically accessible reaction channels while enforcing interstellar-specific conditions such as barrierless entrance pathways and bimolecular stabilization [6]. \nThe resulting energetic data are coupled with kinetic simulations to compute temperature-dependent rate coefficients and branching ratios in the temperature range of interest to astrochemistry. Case studies demonstrate that even small energetic differences can lead to variations in reaction rates of several orders of magnitude at cryogenic temperatures\, underscoring the need for highly accurate computations [1-5]. These theoretical results provide critical input for astrochemical reaction networks\, significantly improving their predictive capability. \nIn addition\, we discuss current computational strategies for modeling chemistry on interstellar grain analogues\, including surface reactions and the formation of complex organic and prebiotic molecules in icy environments. While surface chemistry is increasingly well described [7]\, modeling bulk-ice reactivity remains a major theoretical challenge [1]. DESCRIPTION:Overview \nThe training school will be held at the University of Coimbra\, Portugal\, during 2 full days in January 2026. We aim at gathering together PhD candidates and young researchers with highly qualified trainers\, mostly from the area of machine learning (ML) as applied to computational chemistry problems. The central topic of the school is the parameterization of force fields to be used in molecular simulations by employing either classical fitting approaches or recently proposed ML techniques. Lectures covering introductory ML concepts and applications to potential energy modeling will be delivered by experts. DESCRIPTION:Experimental and Computational Approaches for Studying Multicomponent Confined Systems\n\nOrganizers: Alessandro Fortunelli\, Lyudmila Moskaleva\, Petra Čechová\, and Markéta Paloncyova)\n\nDate: 17 December 2025 09:00-17:00\n\nThis is the 2nd Edition of the WG3 Virtual Symposium – Young Scientists’ Forum – is designed to serve as a platform for Young Researchers and Investigators (YRIs) within the Working Group 3 and the entire Action to present and discuss their research on confined molecular systems. The YSF2025 aims at stimulating discussions on the latest advancements in nanocluster research\, encouraging active participation and knowledge exchange among attendees. By stimulating active participation and knowledge exchange\, the symposium aims to strengthen professional relationships and promote future collaborative projects both within and outside WG3. Building on the success of the previous virtual meetings of WG3: S-1 and S-2 held in 2022 and 2023\, and the 1st Edition of the Young Scientists’ Forum in 2024\, the event will follow a Faraday-Discussion format\, which will allow attendees to discuss their research in a collaborative environment. The Faraday Discussion format foresees that some materials of the presentations are available ahead of the discussion (as DOIs\, slides\, or videos)\, then allowing for their very short presentation by the presenters and reserving a much longer time for the ensuing discussions and questions from the other participants (grounded on the previously available materials). In YSF these two types of contributions are expected: (i) Talks: 5-minute presentations followed by 15 minutes discussion\, (ii) Brief Presentations: Flash presentations of 2 minutes followed by 8 minutes discussion. SUMMARY:CATCOSY 2024. Meeting Facing Challenges. Subnanometric Metal and Metal-Oxide  Catalysts and Photocatalysts
DESCRIPTION:The meeting will address challenges related to the characterization and understanding of subnanometric transition metal and metal-oxide catalysts and photo-catalysts. It will leverage the strategic position of the “COSY” network in the synthesis of atomically precise metal clusters in various environments (gas-phase\, solution\, within helium nanodroplets\, and in biologically relevant media)\, their characterization via. e.g.\, transmission electron microscopy and state-of-the-art computational methods (ab initio\, DFT and molecular dynamics). Specific topics include the design of photo-catalysts for water purification or the sunlight-induced decomposition of greenhouse gases (e.g.\, CO2) using transition metal and metal oxide clusters. The meeting will highlight the need to combine advanced computational tools with experimental synthesis and characterization techniques. \nThe meeting will be hosted at the CSIC Central Campus in Madrid. The program includes 14 lectures and 10 hot topic presentations (see agenda below). Accommodation to every participant is suggested at the nearby CSIC-Residence. SUMMARY:"COSY" Satellite of the Cluster-Surface Interaction Meeting
DESCRIPTION:A dedicated satellite meeting will be organized as a follow-up of the Cluster-Surface Interaction-2024 (CSI-2024) conference to be held in Benried\, rather than Tutzing and near Munich\, Germany in 7-9 April 2024:  https://www.e-conversion.de/csi-2024. The CSI conference series is well-established\, has been running since 2010\, and its meetings are focused on the general topic of deriving fundamental and applied knowledge on the interaction between metal or metal oxide clusters and their deposition support. Various aspects of clusters deposited on surfaces are typically considered\, with a particular focus on growth\, dynamics\, electronic structure\, and applications\, addressing both experimental and theoretical modelling aspects. Cluster deposition on supports represents an important form of confinement\, with implications in various fields\, including heterogeneous catalysis\, sensing\, etc. The COSY Action and in particular its WG3 has many members working in closely related fields. It is therefore natural to network and connect with CSI\, as a scientific community that shares common interests and perspectives. We therefore decided to join forces with CSI by organizing a satellite meeting of the CSI-2024 conference. Leading experts from the COSY network will be invited to deliver a talk at this satellite\, but participation is open to all COSY members.\n\nOur goals in organizing this satellite symposium are: \n\n1. Their quantized ‘molecule-like’ electronic structure showcases unique stability and physical and chemical properties different from those of nanoparticles and bulk materials. When integrated into materials that interact with environmental molecules and sunlight\, AMCs may exhibit enhanced (photo)catalytic activity\, electronic properties\, and even optical behavior. Their tiny size (below 1 nm) makes free AMCs amenable to atomic-scale modelling using either density functional theory (DFT)-based approaches or methods at a higher level of ab initio theory\, even including nonadiabatic (e.g.\, Jahn-Teller) effects. Surfacesupported AMCs can routinely be modelled using DFT-based single-reference methods\, enabling real-time molecular dynamics simulations on the nanoseconds scale. The study of their optical properties is also possible using timedependent DFT or reduced density matrix theory. All these computational and theoretical efforts aim to achieve a molecular-level understanding of the stability and properties of AMCs as function of their chemical composition\, size\, and structural fluxionality in different thermodynamical conditions (temperature and pressure). These efforts bear the potential of guiding experiments to control AMCs functionalities for applications. In this webinar\, the potential of state-of-the-art ab initio (DFT and beyond DFT) modelling will be emphasized through an illustrative overview of recent studies of free and surface-supported AMCs\, including a comparison with experimental measurements [1-17]. SUMMARY:Second Virtual Meeting of the COSY WG3
DESCRIPTION:Control at the Nanoscale – Manipulating Structure and Properties of Nanoscale Clusters. Recent Experimental and Theoretical Advances and Future Challenges\nLik to registration:\nhttps://forms.gle/p9bvTfaYwgiYxJCK7\nThe 2nd WG3 Virtual Symposium will focus on recent experimental and theoretical advancements in the field of nanoscale cluster science\, as well as the future challenges and opportunities. The topics will include: 1) The controlled and precise synthesis and characterization of nanoscale clusters with different compositions\, sizes\, shapes\, and structures; 2) The manipulation and control of nanoscale clusters using external stimuli such as light\, electric fields\, magnetic fields\, or chemical agents; 3) The investigation of the structure-property relationships of nanoscale clusters and their controlled applications in catalysis\, optics\, electronics\, energy conversion\, and storage; 4)The development of computational methods and models for simulating and accurately predicting the properties of nanoscale clusters. The symposium will bring together researchers from different disciplines and backgrounds who share a common interest in nanoscale cluster science at the extreme limit of control. It will provide a platform for exchanging ideas\, presenting results\, discussing challenges\, and fostering collaborations. The symposium may also feature external invited speakers who are leading experts in the field\, as well as presentations in dedicated sessions (see below) and panel discussions. The primary goal of WG3 S-2 is to make the point within the COSY community on the general topic of control at the nanoscale. Transfer of knowledge among the symposium participants\, dissemination of the results already achieved within the framework of WG3\, and positioning in terms of short- and medium-term perspectives will be the main goals of the symposium. Additionally\, the convenience of forming task-force groups (TFGs) on specific topics\, resulting in multi-authored publications will be discussed. An idea is eg that each TFG be led by an experienced researcher and co-led by an early-stage investigator. DESCRIPTION:The Cluster Meeting 2023 (CM2023) will be held from June 18th till 23rd 2023 in Prague (https://www.clustermeeting2023.eu/). CM2023 is a topical international conference with main focus on catalysis\, reactivity\, characterization\, imaging and modeling of primarily size-selected clusters\, as paradigmatic confined systems. The goal of the conference is to promote scientific exchange and interdisciplinary collaborations so as to accelerate progress in this exciting field of nanoscience\, with apparent connections to the COSY COST Action\, and several COSY members (especially from WG3) attending and/or giving presentations. The Cluster Meeting 2023 has been included as targeted conference among ITC-premised ones within the COSY COST Action.

DESCRIPTION:Molecules confined in helium nanodroplets – new light sources for new materials and new applications\nHybrid  Working Group 4 Meeting\nPrague (Czech Republic) \nDear colleagues and participants of WG4 of the COSY Network\, \nThe next COSY Working Group 4 (Helium nanodroplets in science and engineering) meeting will be organized as a hybrid meeting at ELI Beamlines near Prague\, Czech Rep. on 16th of June 2023. The title is Molecules confined in helium nanodroplets – new light sources for new materials and new applications The tentative schedule is: 9:30 – 12:00 and 15:00 – 18:00 and we plan to have 10 oral presentations (in person and online). There will be a lab tour at ELI 13:00-15:00. Besides the scientific presentations we will discuss possibilities for joint activities (research visits\, collaborations\, workshops). \nWe would like to encourage especially younger researchers to attend this meeting and to present their work.
