From a theoretical perspective\, the large molecular size of PAHs limits the applicability of computationally demanding post-Hartree–Fock methods. Their extended conjugation and aromatic ring systems lead to a high density of electronic states\, many of which are near-degenerate due to strong electron delocalization. These features give rise to complex non-adiabatic couplings and multiple relaxation pathways\, making the accurate description of population transfer\, photoproduct formation\, and intramolecular energy migration particularly challenging. \nTopics will include state-of-the-art computational techniques for large PAHs\, accurate modelling of electronic structure and excited-state dynamics\, and the potential of machine-learning-based tools for treating PAH electronic structure. \nOn the experimental side\, recent advances in understanding PAH formation mechanisms\, their role in combustion processes\, and their environmental impact will be presented. These studies rely on advanced spectroscopic techniques\, including synchrotron-based methods and photoion–photoelectron coincidence spectroscopy. Additional sessions will focus on PAH evolution and detection in diverse environments\, PAH structure in terrestrial and interstellar conditions\, and the modification and survival of PAHs under ionizing radiation. \n\nParticipants\nThe workshop is expected to host approximately 20–25 participants\, including 11 invited speakers\, along with a poster session. SUMMARY:3rd General Meeting of the "COSY" COST Action 2025
DESCRIPTION:We cordially invite members of the COST Action CA21101 (“COSY”)\, as well as all interested parties\, to Bologna\, for the Third General Meeting of our COST Action. The meeting will be organized by the University of Bologna (Italy). Located on the Via Emilia\, the city lies a short distance from the sea of the Romagna Riviera and towns such as Florence (35 minutes by high-speed train)\, Venice (1.5 hours by high-speed train)\, Milan (1 hour by high-speed train)\, and Verona (less than 1 hour by train). It can therefore be easily reached by car\, train\, bus or plane. \n\nBY TRAIN – Bologna’s Central Station serves as final destination for a large number of local\, intercity and high-speed trains connecting neighboring locations and the country’s main cities. Bologna’s Central Station is a main hub: the vast majority of long-distance (high-speed) trains from north to south and vice versa stops in Bologna. Please\, visit Trenitalia (https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html) or Italo (https://www.italotreno.com/en/booking-train-ticket) websites to find out about trains inbound to Bologna. Another option is offered by Trainline (https://www.thetrainline.com/it).\nThe station is also the terminus of the Marconi Express\, a monorail link service to Bologna airport.\nBY PLANE – Guglielmo Marconi Airport is located about 10 km from the city center. Dozens of flights from Italian and international destinations land here daily: most of the European cities are directly connected to Bologna. The airport is connected to the central railway station by the Marconi Express service\, which takes only 7 minutes to cover the route. The monorail costs €12\,80 one way and €23\,30 round trip.\nIn addition to this\, from 19 May 2025\, is the new “Q” BUS CONNECTION Bologna Airport with Maggiore Hospital and Central Station. The urban fare of €2.30 is valid for all urban tickets and integration with Marconi Express. Electric buses\, easy purchase (ticket machines\, contactless\, Tper sales points\, on the website\, and on the Roger app). Frequency: 30 minutes.\nFrom the airport you can also reach the center by taxi. A ride to/from the center takes about 20-30 minutes (up to 40 minutes depending on the traffic) with the price ranging from € 20.00-25.00.\nBY CAR – If you travel by car\, you may want to know that Bologna is one of Italy’s major motorway junctions\, connecting the north and south of the country. Bologna is located along the A1\, only 1 hour from Florence (southbound)\, and just over 2 hours from Milan (northbound). Bologna is also the gateway to the A14\, running along the Adriatic side of the peninsula from Romagna all the way to Taranto. Another important thoroughfare is the A13 towards Veneto\, connecting Bologna to cities such as Ferrara and Padua\, the gateway to Venice.\nIf you are travelling by car\, you should know that city center is inside at the Limited Access Zone (ZTL) from 7am to 8pm. Questions & Answers \n14.25 – 14.30 CET. Closing remarks \nDescription of the event: \nObtaining competitive research grants or publishing in top-tier journals can be highly competitive. As the COST-COSY action\, we can think of several reasons why some countries may have a lower success rate in securing such grants or publishing high-impact papers with broad appeal. Here are a few factors we think may contribute to this fact: \n1.Research Infrastructure and Capacity: The requirement for access to state-of-the-art facilities\, cutting-edge technologies\, and a strong research ecosystem is critical for scientific impact. Countries that have invested less in research infrastructure may find it difficult to meet the requirements for executing the necessary research. \n2.Research Culture and Science Capital: Countries with a less-developed research culture\, science capital\, and limited previous success in securing competitive grants or publishing in top-tier journals may face scepticism over the potential for impactful research output from reviewers. \n3.Limited International Visibility: High-impact research is often fed by international collaborations allowing researchers to work across borders and disciplines. Countries with limited international collaborations and networking may struggle to demonstrate the potential for groundbreaking research that transcends national boundaries. Limited international visibility may limit competitiveness. \n4.Awareness and Preparation: Careful preparation\, strategic planning\, and a deep understanding of the evaluation criteria are critical in grant applications and paper submissions. Countries that have limited  awareness or lack specific support mechanisms for researchers in preparing ERC applications or framing and communicating their research output may struggle to produce high-quality proposals/manuscripts that meet the expectations of the evaluators. \n5.Language and Communication Barriers: The language of the application process can pose challenges for researchers from non-English-speaking countries. Strong English writing and communication skills are essential for effectively presenting research proposals. Researchers from countries where English is not the primary language may face additional difficulties conveying their ideas and research potential. \n  \nWith this event\, we would like to highlight that while some countries may face specific challenges\, there are initiatives at the European level to support researchers from less research-intensive countries. We will concentrate on the “Awareness and Preparation” part of our list and focus on capacity-building for early- and mid-career researchers from these countries.
